I’ve been down that road with countless creams, serums, and masks, only to realize that sometimes, it’s not about what you’re doing right, but what you might be doing wrong. 1. Skipping Sunscreen
Let’s be real, we all do it—skipping sunscreen because we’re indoors or it’s cloudy. But trust me, those UV rays are sneaky! In my teenage years I was ADDICTED to laying out in the sun and now at 25 it shows. Not only do I now include a moisturizer with SPF in it, but I also use castor oil for the fine lines and wrinkles I got from not protecting my face when I was younger. UV can be harsh and cause premature aging and hyperpigmentation. Make SPF your daily BFF, rain or shine. Your future self will thank you.
2. Over-Exfoliating
Exfoliating is a MUST in my skin care routine! Exfoliation can feel like a quick fix for dull skin, but you have to be careful because overdoing it strips your skin of essential oils and disrupts its natural barrier. For me personally, I only do it like once a week but some stick to 2-3 times a week. It really just depends on your skin so find what works for you! Remember, moderation is key!
3. Ignoring Your Neck and Chest
It’s easy to focus on your face and neglect your neck and chest, but these areas are just as prone to aging and damage. Throughout my skin care journey I still tend to neglect my neck and chest! What helped me was using a sculpting tool such as a Gua Sha Sculpting Tool. But if you’re feeling extra fancy Electric Beauty Massagers are the way to go! Extend your skincare routine to these regions to ensure uniform radiance.
4. Using Harsh Products
I refuse to use any products with fragrances on my body. Products with alcohol and strong fragrances might feel refreshing initially but can irritate your skin over time. Opt for gentle, hydrating formulas. The gentler the better! Your skin’s health and comfort are more important than an immediate tingle.
5. Sleeping with Makeup On
I used to really be bad about sleeping in a full face of makeup and once I stopped it was a game changer in my overall skin health. We’ve all had those nights but consistently sleeping with makeup on clogs your pores and leads to breakouts. Keep makeup wipes by your bed for those ultra-tired nights. Your skin needs to breathe and regenerate.
6. Not Hydrating Enough
Hydration isn’t just about moisturizers; drinking plenty of water is crucial. Once I began to incorporate more water during the day, I noticed drastic changes in my skin. Dehydrated skin looks dull and can become flaky. It’s good to aim for at least eight glasses a day and incorporate hydrating products like hyaluronic acid into your routine. I personally use and love the Good Molecule’s Hyaluronic Acid Serum! It’s not only the best, but the most affordable and that’s what makes it so great!
7. Popping Pimples
The temptation is real.. Trust me, I get it. Any chance I get I’ll try to pop everything on my boyfriends shoulders (as all weird girlfriends do) but popping pimples can cause scarring and spread bacteria. His shoulders are so scarred because we both can’t help but pick at every little pimple that pops up. Instead, treat them with a spot treatment containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Pimple Patches are also a great option for removing puss filled pimples without the pain of popping! Patience is your ally here.
8. Neglecting a Consistent Routine
This was a huge mistake I made when I was trying to figure out what worked for my skin. Switching products frequently can confuse your skin and lead to breakouts. Find a routine that works and stick to it. Give new products at least a month to show results before jumping ship.
9. Using Dirty Makeup Tools
As I’m writing this I’m realizing how long it’s been since I’ve cleaned my brushes out and all I can say is gross. Dirty brushes and sponges are breeding grounds for bacteria, which can lead to breakouts. It’s important to clean your tools regularly with a gentle cleanser or a dedicated brush cleaner. If this is something you haven’t done yet for your skin care journey, it could be the main reason why your skin hates you. Fresh tools mean fresh skin!
10. Ignoring Ingredients
Reading labels might seem tedious, but knowing what’s in your products is crucial. Avoid comedogenic ingredients that clog pores and look for beneficial ones like antioxidants and peptides. I use this amazing app called Yuka to scan products and it will tell me which ingredients are good and bad. Knowledge is power in skincare!
Bonus Tip: Listen to Your Skin
At the end of the day, your skin knows best. It’s VERY important to always do spot testing first before applying all over the skin. Pay attention to how it reacts to products and adjust accordingly. What works for one person might not work for another, and that’s perfectly okay.
Embarking on a skincare journey is as much about learning from mistakes as it is about finding what works. Avoid these common pitfalls, and you’re well on your way to achieving that clear, radiant skin you’ve been dreaming of.
Stay glowing, and remember, every step you take brings you closer to the skin you deserve. 🌟
With love and radiant vibes, Megan <3
